Canterbury School Architectural Guidelines

The architectural guidelines for Canterbury School require that any new buildings represent physically the philosophical ideal of educating the “whole child” as expressed in the school’s mission statement. The educational concept of the “whole child” leads to the notion of the school as an “extension of the family” . Thus it follows that each building becomes part of a community of buildings, unified by residential scale and detail. The residential tradition has proved appealing over time specifically because it recognizes the local climate and materials necessary to establish a sense of place.
